A Quick and Dirty Explanation of EQ for Lawyers

EQ or Emotional Intelligence is a person capacity and skill to managing their emotions. Dan Goleman’s model of social intelligence focuses on four primary competencies: (1) self-awareness; (2) self-management; (3) social awareness; and (4) relationship and conflict management.

Unlike IQ (intelligence quotient), EQ can be a learned skill and improved. Your weaknesses can be strengthened. You are not subject to a genetic lottery. You control your own destiny when it comes to this skill set. That is one of the most attractive aspects of being a lawyer. It fits in with our American “Manifest Destiny” attitude. You can control your own future – if you choose.
